brilliant games by a british world title challengernigel short challenged garry kasparov for the world title in 1993. this book gives short's best games commented on in detail with wins against karpov , kasparov himself, seirawan, miles gelfand, speelman and timman.
best games by a british title challengernigel short was a chess prodigy who swept through the ranks of experienced grandmasters including anatoly karpov and jan timman to take on garry kasparov in the 1993 world championship. against kasparov , short was outclassed but he held his own with all the rest and played some wonderful tactical games for example against yasser seirawan. this book is very useful indeed for players who like to play 1e4 and start attacking right from the word go!

The Nutcracker Ballet Mystery
Published in Turtleback by Demco Media (December, 1992)
Average review score:

Great BookThis was a great book. Bess is helping out at the girls' old ballet school, Madam Dugrand's, making costumes for their upcoming production of The Nutcracker. The school is struggling financially and has asked Shana Edwards, an old student who has starred in New York, to perform as Sugar Plum Fairy. But while George & Nancy are visiting Bess at the school, a strange event takes place, leaving Shana injured. Nancy notices Darci Edwards, Shana's young sister, staring jealously from the sidelines. Darci is just as talented as Shana, but has to dance in the shadow of her older sister. A strange string of events follows, with Darci & Lawrence, Shana's dancer partner, looking suspicious. It keeps getting more dangerous... can Nancy, Bess & George save the school?
A Story for all Mystery and Ballet Fans everywhere! This was the first Nancy Drew book I ever read. I didn't know I would love it as much as I still do today. In this novel, Nancy Drew and her friend George decide to pay a visit to their old ballet school and teacher, Madame Dugrand. Their friend Bess is now helping out making costumes and she is trying to make sure they have a fun time. In fact, their old friend Shana Edwards, who has made highlights in New York is coming back to be the Sugar Plum Fairy. But Shana's visit won't be as pretty as a ballerina costume due to her younger sister, Darci, who is mad that Shana is going to be the star. But what makes matters worse for Darci, is that Shana will have to dance with her close friend, Lawrence. Sibling rivalry, theft, and fires are only a few things that Nancy, George, and Bess encounter. And when the prop mistress quits after some of the outbreaks, Nancy and George are now becoming regulars at the dance academy and closer to the danger than ever. Will Madame Dugrand have to cancel the production? Will Shana get upstaged by Darci and Lawrence who are dead set against her? You will have to read this book and see.

The Paper Door and Other Stories by Shiga Naoya
Published in Paperback by Columbia University Press (15 January, 2001)
Average review score:

Talking flowers, gourds, and sushiI was first introduced to the works of Naoya Shiga when I read his wonderful novel _A Dark Night's Passing_. Shiga's short stories are just as interesting as his longer works. The stories in this book stretch a long period of time from 1904 until 1945. Shiga, although considered one of the top modern japanese writers, is famous for the small amount of writting that he produced in his very long life. My favorites in the book are "The Razor," "Seibei and his Gourds," "The House by the Moat, and "Kuniko."
Without going into detail about each story. Several themes pop up in the stories: death, lonliness, unfaithfulness, among others. But the thing that struck me the hardest was the male's view of women. The stories "A Memory of Yamashina," Infatuatio," and "Kuniko" really show this very well. In the first two a husband who has been caught having an affair makes his wife feel guilty because she fell in love with her doctor. She never had physical relations with him, but the husband thought that was enough to excuse his affair. "Kuniko" must be read to be believed. Good book check it out.
LIFE AS IT IS.The book I enjoyed the most in Japanese. SHIGA is unlike other famous Japanese writers such as Mishima or Dazai. If their works are like roses, his is much like Morning Glory. His style is more simple. Yet beautiful. It is like a piece of art. Just reading a sentence and you can actually "see" it in your head... Unfortunately there were some parts mistranslated in this book.

The Secret in the Old Lace
Published in Paperback by Pocket Books (September, 1991)
Average review score:

The Secret of the Old LaceI thought this book was cool. Nancy, Bess, and George go to Belgium to help a friend of Bess's mother. A lot of creepy, awful things happen. Nancy enters a mystery contest, but her manuscript gets stolen, someone tries to break in their house, and in Belgium lots of things happen, too. There are many suspicious people there, Ms. Marvin's friend's diamond pendant is stolen, there are lots of creepy trapdoors and passageways, even a ghost! I guarantee that you'll love this book if you read it.
the secert in the old lace audio cassetteIt's nice to sit back and have the story readto you. I can close my eyes and let my imagination take over. The story lives up to the Nancy Drew series with twist and turns in the plot (not wanting to ruin the plot i won't go into it here). It was read with a lot of energy and excitment that realy added to the expiernce. I wish they would release more of the series like this. I would highly recomend the expierence to anyone who enjoys Nancy Drew.

The Secret of Mirror Bay (Her Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, 49)
Published in Hardcover by Price Stern Sloan Pub (January, 1972)
Average review score:

The Secret of Mirror BayThis book is very suspenseful. It makes you want to keep reading, also there is a good plot, and it is well written. If you like this book read other "Nancy Drew" books, written by Carolyn Keene. I really liked this book, actually, I loved reading it.
Nancy goes to look into 1 thing and finds another. This book is wonderful. It has two mysteries in one. It's one of the best I've read. It has a great plot, and it neatly draws it together at the end. It kept me in suspense and it was difficult to put away. And if you enjoy this one, I suggest you read Clue in the Diary ,too.

very good"The Spider Sapphire Mystery" is one of the best Nancy Drews I've ever read. It was a little more exciting than the other books. It's about Nancy trying to find a genuine spider sapphire and she's also trying to find the brother of a famous singer. This brother, named Tizam, then turns out to be part of the spider sapphire theft---but without his knowledge. Confused? Hurry and read the book!
